A video shared by Soumi Chakraborty on LinkedIn has shed light on a toxic work environment experienced by employees at HDFC Bank. The video, which quickly gained widespread attention after being shared by multiple users, showcased a firsthand account of the employees’ experiences under the leadership of senior vice president Pushpal Roy.
In the video, which was in the Bengali language, Roy can be seen snapping at his subordinates during a discussion about their work status and targets. His stern tone and the use of phrases like “Shut Up” towards the employees were particularly concerning. One instance caught on camera shows Roy telling an employee named John, “For you, my CPI Score is 77. Today, I will issue an HR memo to you and Tithir.”
Following the video’s viral spread, HDFC Bank took immediate action and suspended the officer in question in Kolkata. The bank issued a statement in which they referenced the social media report and stated that a detailed investigation would be conducted according to the bank’s Conduct guidelines. HDFC Bank reaffirmed their commitment to a zero-tolerance policy for any form of misconduct at the workplace, emphasizing their belief in treating all employees with dignity and respect.
The incident prompted numerous users on social media to call for stricter labor laws in the country. Many expressed their disappointment that such toxic behavior has become prevalent in various organizations. One LinkedIn user wrote, “This is the picture of all financial institutions, and this is also the picture of the state right now… He is just the reflection.” Others demanded that strict action be taken against individuals who engage in such negative behavior, stressing the importance of self-worth and self-respect for all employees. Another user stated that India urgently needs stringent labor laws, as leadership often prioritizes numbers, profit, and share price surges over employee well-being and a positive work culture.
The incident serves as a reminder of the significance of fostering a healthy work environment and addressing toxic behavior promptly. It also highlights the need for comprehensive labor laws that protect employees and ensure their rights and dignity are upheld. Going forward, it is crucial for organizations to actively promote a positive work culture and prioritize the well-being of their employees.
