Google releases Android 14 Beta 4 with bug fixes and new unlocking feature

Google has rolled out the Android 14 Beta 4, marking another step towards the final release of the operating system update. While this version primarily focuses on bug fixes, it also introduces a convenient feature to simplify the unlocking process.

Auto-Confirm Unlock Feature Enhances User Experience

One notable addition in Beta 4 is the “auto-confirm unlock” feature found in the settings menu. With this feature, the phone automatically unlocks once the correct PIN code of six digits or more is entered. Previously, users had to manually tap the enter button to confirm the unlock. While Google acknowledges that auto-unlocking is slightly less secure, it offers a more streamlined experience.

Improved Volume Controls and Other Enhancements

In earlier beta versions, adjusting the ring volume would also affect the notification volume, limiting users’ ability to raise the ring volume without affecting notifications. However, with the latest update, the ring volume and notification volume sliders are now separate, allowing for independent adjustments, as highlighted by Android researcher Mishaal Rahman.

Additional enhancements in Android 14 Beta 4 include new default profile pictures, support for the beta version on tablets and foldable devices, an enhanced widget picker for tablets, and a more prominent placement of the split-screen option in the long-press menu. Users can download the update immediately for Google phones, including the Pixel 4a and newer models.

Release Timeline and Upcoming Features

Google released the first developer beta for Android 14 in March, followed by the first public beta in April. The company’s earlier timetable expected to reach stability in July, with the final version to follow. Anticipations suggest that the company will release the stable version of Android 14 in August.

Among the notable features of the Android 14 update are an upgraded back gesture, per-app language settings, a screenshot detection API, and a new photo picker that allows users to grant app access to specific photos rather than their entire gallery. These enhancements promise to further enhance the user experience on Android devices.
