Zomato faces backlash as family receives chicken instead of paneer biryani in Varanasi

In a recent incident in Varanasi, an Internet user took to Twitter to share how his friend’s family received chicken instead of Paneer Biryani that they had ordered online. The incident occurred when Ashwini Shrivastava’s friend placed a meal order through the popular online food ordering platform, Zomato.

Religious Beliefs and Frustration

Ashwini highlighted the incident on social media, posting video evidence showing that the food packaging had a vegetarian label. The unfortunate incident took place during the holy month of ‘Sawan,’ when many Hindus abstain from consuming non-vegetarian food. Compounding the disappointment, the family had plans to visit a temple after their meal.

The family felt that Zomato and the vendor, Behrouz Biryani, had disregarded their religious beliefs, leaving them feeling violated. Their frustration escalated when neither the restaurant nor the food ordering platform took responsibility for the mishap.

Zomato’s Apology and Investigation

Reports suggest that Zomato has since apologized for the incident and is currently investigating the matter. Ashwini’s tweet gained significant attention, with over one million views and 3.8 thousand retweets. Behrouz Biryani also responded to the viral tweet, addressing the situation.

The Unfortunate Realization

According to Ashwini, his friend’s family strictly adheres to a vegetarian diet and does not consume any kind of meat. Initially, they were unaware that they were eating chicken, as Paneer Biryani often features paneer wrapped in a gram flour covering, making it difficult to differentiate between the two. It was only after tasting the dish further that they realized it was not paneer but something else entirely, leading to their disappointment.

However, Many suggested avoiding ordering vegetarian meals from restaurants famous for non-vegetarian food, while some placed the blame solely on the restaurant and not Zomato. One comment read, “Zomato delivers food ordered by its patrons and cooked and packed by the restaurant chosen. Zomato rider won’t check the content of the order. He or she will simply deliver. The issue was at the end of the restaurant, and they solely should be blamed for this mishap.”
