Social media giant Meta is preparing to introduce the web version of its app Threads, a competitor to Twitter/X, next week, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. Meta’s plan to unveil the web version of Threads is anticipated to occur early next week, though the company’s intentions are subject to potential changes. While a few Threads posts have been viewable on the web, access has been limited due to Threads being primarily designed for mobile phone users.

Confirmation of Internal Testing from Threads and Instagram CEO

Threads and Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri confirmed the internal testing of the web version of Threads last week. Responding to a comment on Threads, Mosseri stated, “We’re working on it! We’ve been using an early version internally for a week or two. Still needs some work before we can open it up to everyone though…”

Added Features and Efforts Against Fake News

Recent enhancements to Threads include the incorporation of a following tab and the ability for users to verify a link using their Mastodon profile. The WSJ report highlighted that Threads has initiated the display of labels for state-controlled media outlets as of Thursday, aimed at combatting the spread of fake news and propaganda.

Meta Threads Struggles to Maintain User Engagement

On July 5, Threads was launched in response to social media platform X. Threads aimed to attract users unhappy with changes by owner Elon Musk. The app initially gained a positive reception, amassing over 100 million monthly users in a week. However, recent SimilarWeb data (as of August 7) shows a drop to around 10 million active Threads users.

Meta Threads Performance Compared to Competitors

In contrast, Insider Intelligence’s estimations reveal that X boasts around 363.7 million monthly active users. In the company’s previous quarterly earnings report in July of last year, X disclosed having 237.8 million daily active users. As Threads contends with user engagement challenges, the competitive landscape of social media continues to evolve.
