Qualcomm Unveils XR and AR Platforms for Next-Gen Immersive Experiences

Share via:

Semiconductor leader Qualcomm has announced its latest innovations in spatial computing with two platforms: the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 and the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1. These platforms are poised to propel the era of mixed reality (MR), virtual reality (VR) devices, and smart glasses, raising the bar for immersive experiences.

The Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 Platform represents a mix of MR and VR within a single chip architecture. This empowers the development of thinner, more comfortable headsets that eliminate the need for external battery packs. This platform enables users to merge virtual content with their physical environment and effortlessly transition between MR and VR experiences. On the other hand, the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 Platform is engineered with optimizations tailored for thermal efficiency, making way for sleek smart glasses.

This platform can capture, share, or live-stream hands-free directly from the glasses. Additionally, on-device AI functionalities facilitate personal assistant features like audio quality enhancement, visual search, and real-time translation.

Qualcomm recognizes the significant potential of merging physical and digital spaces, a notion underscored by its close collaboration with Meta. These platforms will make their commercial debut on Meta devices in 2023, featuring the Meta Quest 3, powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 Platform, and the Ray Ban Meta collection, powered by the Snapdragon AR1 Platform.

Hugo Swart, Vice President and General Manager of XR at Qualcomm highlighted that the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 and Snapdragon AR1 Platforms are purpose-built processors, intended to propel the next generation of MR and VR devices and sleek smart glasses into the mainstream, making premium experiences accessible to users worldwide. The commercial launch of these platforms in collaboration with Meta marks another significant stride towards realising their shared vision of affordable, all-in-one XR devices and smart glasses.
