Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is planning to lay off employees in its Reality Labs division’s silicon unit focused on metaverse development. The company informed employees of the layoffs through an internal post. The layoffs could potentially impact Mark Zuckerberg’s plans for creating augmented and virtual reality products. Meta is also working on advanced AR glasses and smartwatches, with the first version expected to be completed next year. The unit mainly affected is the FAST unit, which designs custom chips for Meta’s AR/VR devices. Meta has been cutting jobs to address declining revenue growth and significant losses in the Reality Labs division.
