US-based ride-hailing giant Uber, which battles with Bhavish Aggarwal-led Ola Cabs, has partnered with the West Bengal Government’s Transport Department to launch a new bus shuttle service in Kolkata.

The upcoming service named ‘Uber Shuttle’, which is part of Uber’s expansion into different modes of transportation, is aimed at office goers offering a new solution for daily commuters in the city.

What will Uber Shuttle offer?

According to Uber, Uber Shuttle will be rolled out by March 2024 with about 60 air-conditioned buses. These buses will operate on predefined routes, linking major business districts with residential areas.

The service aims to provide a comfortable and efficient commuting experience, similar to that of an Uber cab. Features include pre-booking seats up to a week in advance, live tracking of buses, and accurate ETA information. It will operate daily from 6 am to 10 pm, ensuring a standing-free, secure ride for commuters.

What will the economic and environmental impact be?

Apart from the introduction of Uber Shuttle, Uber has pledged a significant investment of $10 million in West Bengal by 2025, which would create around 50,000 job opportunities in Kolkata, contributing to the city’s economic growth.

Additionally, by encouraging shared rides, Uber Shuttle aims to reduce road congestion and carbon emissions, aligning with global sustainability goals.
