Bengaluru-based generative AI (GenAI) startup Sarvam AI has raised $41 million in a Series A funding round led by Lightspeed, with participation from Peak XV Partners and Khosla Ventures.

Enhancing India-specific AI offerings

Sarvam AI plans to use the funding to enhance India-specific AI offerings. The startup aims to layer GenAI on top of India’s successful digital infrastructure for public goods applications. With this investment, Sarvam AI is poised to become a beacon for AI innovation in India, attracting top talent to address foundational research challenges.

Developing full-stack product

Sarvam AI is focused on developing a comprehensive “full-stack” product. According to the startup, the product aims to facilitate the training of custom AI models and serve as an enterprise-grade platform. It aims to accelerate the adoption of GenAI in India, addressing the challenges enterprises face in leveraging this technology for business growth.

Who are the founders?

Co-founded by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar, Sarvam AI is driven by a mission to create GenAI with a “population-scale impact.” Raghavan, known for his work in building Digital Public Goods like Aadhaar, and Kumar, with his experience in AI4Bharat, bring a unique blend of expertise to the table.

The founders aim to work with Indian companies to build domain-specific AI models, particularly focusing on supporting Indian languages and voice-first interfaces.

“I have seen first hand the enormous value in innovating at foundational layers and deploying at population scale. India has demonstrated that it can harness technology differently, and with GenAI we have an opportunity to reimagine how this technology can add value to people’s lives,” said Vivek Raghavan, co-founder of Sarvam AI.

Apart from Sarvam AI, AI4Bharat, OnFinance.ai, Hexo, and Gan.ai, among others, are some of the Indian startups working in the Gen AI space.
