Airbnb is being fined $10.1 million, here’s why

Airbnb has been fined AUD 15 million by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission for misleading consumers about its pricing practices in Australia. The company made false or misleading claims to about 70,000 customers between 2018 and 2021, displaying prices in US dollars without clarifying that they were not in Australian dollars. Airbnb admitted to breaching Australian consumer law and will pay up to $15m in compensation to affected customers. The total value of the pricing difference was $16.8m, with Airbnb receiving approximately A$9m in revenue.
