At a time when Indian companies increasingly embracing artificial intelligence (AI), Uttar Pradesh has taken a significant leap by planning to establish the country’s first AI city in Lucknow.

The development is aimed at creating an entire ecosystem dedicated to its growth and application. The global AI market, valued at $137 billion in 2022, is expected to expand rapidly, and Uttar Pradesh aims to be at the forefront of this growth.

Why Lucknow?

Lucknow, known for its rich cultural heritage, is now set to become the hub of AI innovation. The city already hosts Centers of Excellence in AI and MedTech, with the AI Centre of Excellence at IIIT Lucknow supporting over 15 AI/ML startups. Notably, the nurturing environment for creativity and entrepreneurship is a cornerstone of the AI city concept.

Infrastructure and support

The Uttar Pradesh Electronics Corporation Ltd., as the nodal agency, has issued an Expression of Interest for the development of the AI city.

The plan includes a 40-acre land allocation in the Nadarganj Industrial Area, close to Lucknow International Airport. The government is offering substantial financial incentives, including capital expenditure support and stamp duty exemptions, to attract real estate developers for this ambitious project.

A city designed for innovation and growth

The AI city will not just be a business hub; it will integrate residential complexes, educational institutions, and AI-enabled transport systems. The holistic approach aims to foster a walk-to-work culture and strong industry-academic collaboration.

The presence of major IT players like HCLTech and TCS, along with a skilled workforce, further strengthens the city’s position as an emerging technology hub.

Aiming to become a $1 trillion economy

This project is a critical part of Uttar Pradesh’s strategy to become a $1 trillion economy in the next five years. By focusing on IT and ITeS as core sectors and leveraging AI, the state government aims to propel economic growth and position Uttar Pradesh as a leader in the global tech landscape.
