An aerial view of Force Rescue continues work at the site of a train accident at Odisha, Balasore, India, 03 June 2023.

Synopsis

Every train passenger with a confirmed berth can buy insurance for just INR0.35 per ticket. Earlier, it was an ‘auto selection’ when tickets were bought online. One could opt out if desired. However, after a few consumer activists protested, buying insurance along with the train ticket was made optional for customers.

Evening. June 2, 2023. As Meera (name changed), along with her friends and other family members, was celebrating her birthday on the Puri beach, little did she know that her life was turning upside down some 250km away on a railway track. She received a message from a close relative telling her about a train accident in Balasore. But she didn’t pay much attention. The following morning, Meera received a call from a railway hospital in Balasore
