OpenAI is reportedly in discussions to acquire Windsurf, an AI-powered coding platform, for approximately $3 billion, according to Bloomberg, citing a source close to the matter. If finalized, this would mark OpenAI’s largest acquisition to date. However, the deal is still under negotiation and may change or fall through.

OpenAI has not commented on the potential acquisition, and Windsurf—formerly known as Codeium—declined to respond to Reuters’ inquiries. Windsurf previously raised $150 million in 2024, led by General Catalyst, valuing the company at $1.25 billion.

Interest in AI tools has surged recently, especially in coding and chatbot applications. In March, OpenAI announced plans to raise up to $40 billion, potentially boosting its valuation to $300 billion.

Previously, in 2023, OpenAI acquired Global Illumination, a company that developed creative AI tools, though the acquisition amount was not disclosed.
