In a major expansion of its AI capabilities, OpenAI has officially launched gpt-image-1, the multimodal model behind ChatGPT’s image generation, to developers and businesses via API, chief executive Sam Altman confirmed the development on X.

The move comes after the feature’s debut last month, where over 130 million users generated more than 700 million images in just one week.
