According to Counterpoint Research, Apple’s iPhone 16 was the world’s top-selling smartphone during the first quarter of 2025. Interestingly, even the older iPhone 15 — launched in September 2023 — managed to outsell many of the latest Android flagships, highlighting Apple’s strong global dominance across both new and older models.

This marks the first time in two years that Apple’s standard iPhone (not the Pro or Pro Max version) claimed the number one spot worldwide. It saw especially strong sales in Japan, boosted by favorable economic conditions and improved carrier subsidies, as well as in the Middle East and Africa (MEA).

Following the iPhone 16 were the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro, taking second and third place respectively. The Pro models together accounted for nearly half of all iPhone sales during the quarter, showing continued consumer demand for high-end features. However, Apple faced challenges in China, where local brands like Huawei gained market share thanks to government-backed support for affordable phones.

Apple’s newly launched iPhone 16e also made waves, ranking sixth despite only being available for one full month in the quarter. Though priced higher than the iPhone SE 2022, its upgraded specs and features resonated well with buyers and could lead to stronger long-term sales.

On the Android side, Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra came in seventh. It saw slightly lower sales than last year’s S24 Ultra, primarily because of its shorter time on the market during the quarter. Nevertheless, it performed well, backed by Samsung’s push into Galaxy AI and tech improvements.

Samsung’s budget lineup also did well: the Galaxy A16 5G reached fifth place with strong demand in North and Latin America, while the Galaxy A06 gained popularity in emerging markets.

Xiaomi was the only non-Apple, non-Samsung brand to crack the global top 10. Its Redmi 14C 4G saw major growth over its predecessor, driven by strong performance in regions like MEA and Latin America, where consumers prioritize affordability and reliability.
