Zepto’s food business license in Mumbai’s Dharavi area has been suspended by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to serious lapses in food safety compliance, according to a Business Standard report dated 1 June 2025.
During an inspection prompted by FDA Minister Yogen Kadam, officials discovered multiple violations at the facility operated by Kiranakart Technologies, Zepto’s parent company. Issues included fungal contamination on products, inadequate temperature control in cold storage, and failure to clearly separate expired from valid food items. Additionally, food was reportedly stored directly on wet, dirty floors, with some items placed near clogged and stagnant water.
The FDA stated these findings violate the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses Regulations, 2011. As a result, Assistant Commissioner Anupamaa Balasaheb Patil ordered an immediate suspension of Zepto’s operations under Section 32(3) of the Act. The suspension will stay in place until the company achieves full compliance and receives clearance.
In response, Zepto acknowledged the shortcomings and assured that corrective steps are already underway. A company spokesperson emphasized their commitment to food safety and hygiene, noting that internal reviews have begun and they are cooperating with authorities to resume operations as soon as possible.
