When Carl Pei said earlier this year that he didn’t understand the smartphone industry’s obsession with chipsets, I found myself nodding along. He’s right — for most people, it really doesn’t matter what chip is running their phone. I mean, how often do you hear someone on the street say, “Oh no, my Snapdragon can’t handle this Google Doc!” Never!

What people care about is whether their phone works smoothly, doesn’t lag, and looks good while doing it.
