OpenAI has further delayed the release of its highly anticipated open-source AI model, marking its second postponement. CEO Sam Altman announced the indefinite delay on Saturday, citing the need for more time to conduct thorough safety testing. This follows an initial delay in June.
This release is significant as it would be OpenAI’s first open-source project since 2019 and, notably, its first ever reasoning-focused AI model made available to the public. The company has emphasized the importance of responsible AI development and deployment, likely contributing to the cautious approach. Back in April, OpenAI actively sought feedback from the community through an “Open model feedback” form, indicating a commitment to incorporating external perspectives into the model’s development.
