On Friday, WordPress maker Automattic rel=”nofollow” href=”https://automattic.com/2025/10/24/counterclaims/” target=”_blank”>filed its rel=”nofollow” href=”https://automattic.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/automattic-counterclaims.pdf” target=”_blank”>counterclaims in the lawsuit initiated by hosting company WP Engine in rel=”nofollow” href=”https://automattic.com/2024/10/31/legal-response-to-wp-engine/” target=”_blank”>October 2024, which had accused Automattic and its CEO, Matt Mullenweg, of defamation and abuse of power. Automattic believes that WP Engine has been abusing the WordPress trademark and has engaged in deceptive marketing practices, without properly giving back to the open source community.
