Days after launching its flagship-grade smartphone Xiaomi 14T, Xiaomi is now planning to bring generative AI (GenAI) user applications to its smartphones in India by the end of the financial year 2024-2025.
The initiative will majorly cover Xiaomi’s upper-mid range smartphones which are priced around INR 40K, Mint reported, citing sources close to the matter.
With this, Xiaomi aims to democratise GenAI features, which are so far limited to premium smartphones only.
Inc42 has reached out to Xiaomi for comments on the development. The story will be updated based on the response.
The development comes a few days after Xiaomi reportedly launched Xiaomi 14T and 14T Pro smartphones with Google’s Gemini suite of GenAI features including its AI photo editor and “circle to search” option.
It is pertinent to note that these features are already available in Google’s Pixel range of smartphones.
With this roll out, Xiaomi aims to give a neck and neck competition to other smartphone brands, including Apple, Oppo, Samsung and Google in terms of GenAI features.
“AI features in Xiaomi phones may also have been expedited by Oppo’s announcement of across-the-board generative AI features being added to all of its smartphones,” the sources told Mint.
As of July 2024, Xiaomi continued to dominate the Indian smartphone market with 23% YoY growth in its shipments, with Samsung grabbing the third position, data from Counterpoint showed.
