Google Elevates Preeti Lobana As The New India Head

Tech giant Google has elevated its seasoned executive Preeti Lobana as new country manager and vice president for India.

“Following my eight plus incredible years at Google, leading customer-centric solutions, I am filled with gratitude and excitement to start my next chapter in a new capacity as country manager and vice president for Google India,” said Lobana in a LinkedIn post.

“Having witnessed firsthand how the internet has transformed businesses, and having collaborated closely with product teams to deliver exceptional value to our customers, I’m energised by this incredible opportunity,” she added.

This comes nearly five months after Sanjay Gupta, the former country head and vice president for Google India, was reportedly promoted as the president for Asia-Pacific region.

“Lobana’s leadership will be instrumental as we deepen our engagement with India’s unique ecosystem, leveraging AI advancements like Gemini to accelerate digital inclusion and unlock unprecedented economic opportunities for every Indian. I am confident that her deep market expertise will guide us in shaping a future where technology truly benefits all,” said Gupta, while announcing the development in a LinkedIn post.

In her new role, Lobana will partner with Roma Datta Chobey, who led as the interim country manager and will continue her leadership as managing director for Google India’s digital native industries. Chobey’s expertise is across diverse sectors, from ecommerce and fintech to gaming and media.

As per her LinkedIn profile, Lobana joined Google in 2016 as the director for APAC, customer experience. Three years later, she was promoted as senior director, ads customer care in the company.

In 2021, Lobana took up the role of vice president for publishers, partners, ads content teams, gTech at Google. 

With over 20 years of experience across the banking industry, she had also worked with NatWest Group, Standard Chartered Bank, American Express and ANZ Grindlays Bank.

Back in November, Google India roped in Meta’s Mitul Shah as the managing director for its devices and services business to boost its footprint in India in the premium smartphone market. 

According to data from digital intelligence platform Sensor Tower, India has surpassed the US to become the largest market for AI mobile app downloads. As per the report, the country accounted for 21% of the global AI app downloads. AI app downloads by Indians surpassed the 2.2 Bn mark by August 2024.
