Dubai launches electric driverless abras

Dubai has announced the trial of driverless electric abras in city waters. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has begun testing the first autonomous electric abras, which can carry up to eight passengers.

The craft was built locally at RTA’s Al Garhoud Marine Maintenance Centre and features a design that honours the abras’ heritage. This abra’s first journey was from Al Jaddaf Station to the Festival City Station on Dubai Creek.

“The operation of the Autonomous Electric Abra is in line with RTA’s efforts to achieve Dubai’s Strategy for Self-Driving Transport, which aims to convert 25% of total mobility journeys in Dubai into self-driving journeys by 2030,” said Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, RTA.
