Apple is testing a ChatGPT-like AI chatbot

Share via:

In an effort to challenge leading AI companies like OpenAI and Google, Apple is reportedly working on artificial intelligence tools, according to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The tech giant has already developed an internal chatbot referred to as “Apple GPT.” While the company has yet to finalize its strategy for consumer release, sources indicate that Apple is planning to make a significant AI-related announcement in the coming year.

Apple Building Its Own Framework – Codenamed “Ajax”

Apple has taken a proactive approach by creating its own framework, codenamed “Ajax,” to build large language models similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. Running on Google Cloud and built with Google JAX, Apple’s Ajax allows the company to develop large language models that form the basis for their internal ChatGPT-style tool.

Internal Rollout and Security Concerns

Initially, the internal rollout of the chatbot was halted due to security concerns regarding generative AI. However, the chatbot has since become available to more Apple employees, although it requires special approval for access. Customers cannot use the output from the chatbot to develop features.

Product Prototyping and Applications

Apple employees are utilizing the chatbot for product prototyping purposes. The chatbot has the capability to summarize text and answer questions based on its trained data. While it shares similarities with existing chatbots like Bard and ChatGPT, Apple’s offering does not include any additional features distinguishing it from commercially available options.

Apple Catching Up in Generative AI

While other major tech companies have already released generative AI products to the public, Apple has remained relatively reserved in this field. However, the company is now actively seeking generative AI talent, as evident from its recent job postings. By expanding its AI capabilities, the company aims to meet consumer demand for generative AI tools that can assist with tasks like drafting essays and processing images. Additionally, company remains committed to addressing potential privacy concerns associated with artificial intelligence, a stance supported by CEO Tim Cook, who emphasized a thoughtful and measured approach to incorporating AI into the company’s offerings.
