Yusuf Hakim & Let’s Enterprise team launch India’s 1st “Working Degree” hoping to be the first of many.

Yusuf Hakim went through the country’s education system just like the rest of us, and chose to pursue a course in Mechanical Engineering from an Institute in Pune. He was struck by the monopoly of theoretical teaching, and took responsibility for his education in his own hands.

Yusuf and his classmates designed, assembled and manufactured an all-terrain car for BAJA Racing, which raced against cars from colleges. All across India in Indore and New Delhi and from different colleges across the world in Johannesburg. While working on this project, he realised how much the practical work experience. Thus, helped him contextualise the things he had learnt in the classroom. 

Following that, he was placed at Atlas Copco during his third year of engineering. He worked as a design engineer and took on some critical projects at the Global Engineering Center of Atlas Copco. This laid the foundation of his understanding of how industry works. How you can create an entrepreneurial mindset even though you are in a job environment.

By strategically weaving his learnings from Atlas Copco, excitement for innovation from BAJA and the infrastructure of his family’s paint trading business. Yusuf created his own unique blends by finding new markets for his well-established family business (A A Hakim store est. 1885).

Since 2015, Bohriali.com has helped 60,000 artists around the country and shops in Pune to get online, to a level that when the covid pandemic hit, it was almost effortless for many of these ventures to continue their business online.

Through all these experiences, he felt the gap between academic curriculum and industry reality, and realized how experiential learning. Which is learning by doing and reflecting can empower youth in creating their own journeys. There needed to be a platform that would help them bridge this gap through not just skill development. But also a composite exploration of themselves in relation to their strengths and weaknesses, and the things they wanted to accomplish in life.

Yusuf feels, “For me it (Bohriali.com) has never been just a trading business, it is a place where we inspire the country to create. To take action, to take initiative to create magic and we’d love to enable them in every way possible using the best of tools at our disposal! I have had an opportunity to create my own journey, as I had practical exposure from the experiences I pursued alongside academics. And I want to empower young people around the country to do the same.” 

Yusuf is a changemaker who by nature is driven by the service culture prevalent in the Dawoodi Bohra community. He is actively part of several social initiatives like the FMB community kitchen constantly looking for ways to use business skills to make a better impact on people around him and society at large.

Thus, Yusuf along with Aditya Jhunjhunwala, Nisha Chawla and Palak Krishnamurthy created. Let’s Enterprise in 2018 to help youth around the country build an entrepreneurial mindset via experiential learning.

They believe that anyone who can read and understand a sentence should be a job creator, not just a job consumer. Their vision is to bring the entrepreneurial mindset into the curriculum and program design of Indian schools and colleges. Thus, ensuring that future generations have the confidence, skills, and network necessary to thrive in the business world.

The entrepreneurial and mentoring industry in India has been experiencing significant growth over the years. With the country’s vibrant startup ecosystem and a surge in young entrepreneurs, there is a growing demand for programs that can bridge the gap between academia and the industry. 

Let’s Enterprise has emerged as a key player in this industry, redefining the way students develop.

To prototype experiential learning curricula and processes for addressing the gap between academic curriculum. And industry reality, Let’s Enterprise launched the Enterprise India Fellowship (EIF) program in 2018. This innovative initiative offers an experiential curriculum that enables students to engage with industry leaders under the guidance of mentors. Through a combination of in-house projects, personal endeavors, and strategic consulting engagements. With diverse industries, fellows spend over 380 hours gaining practical skills and knowledge.

Over the last 5 years, through the EIF program, Let’s Enterprise has worked with 74 students from 11 cities. And 17 different streams and done projects with 30+ clients (across industries- from drone to construction. Mental health to manufacturing, social sector to tech). The program’s success is evident in the achievements of its alumni, who have developed competencies. Such as teamwork, clear communication, and self-awareness.

By providing value-added services and an immersive learning experience. Let’s Enterprise ensures that students are willing to invest in their personal and professional growth. Let’s Enterprise has primarily relied on bootstrapping and self-funding to fuel its growth. Thus, Let’s Enterprise generates revenue primarily through participant fees for the different human centred programs that are customizable to the participants. The fees cover the costs of weekly workshops, mentoring sessions, facilitating consulting projects with MSMEs, and other program-related expenses.

Building the brand involved a multi-faceted strategy, including online and offline marketing efforts. Let’s Enterprise leveraged digital platforms to create awareness and attract aspiring entrepreneurs. They also organized events, workshops, and collaborations with industry experts to establish credibility and expand their reach.

As Let’s Enterprise continues to refine its core components and methodologies, it aims to make experiential learning accessible to a larger number of students. Alongside the EIF program, Let’s Enterprise has just launched the UnderGrad Program. In Multidisciplinary Entrepreneurial Development (UG-M.E.D.) in collaboration with a university’s three-year BBA degree. This “working degree” approach emphasizes project-based learning, with students dedicating 80% of their course time to practical experiences. And 20% to academic learning.

Let’s Enterprise boasts a talented and passionate team and diverse partner community of entrepreneurs, CXOs, and coaches. They are united by their shared vision of transforming the way young entrepreneurs are groomed in India.

In an effort to bridge the gap between academic curriculum and industry reality, Let’s Enterprise has a community of industry leaders. And Pride Builders are Let’s Enterprise Industry Partners who students will have the opportunity to do projects and apprenticeships with. And 31 enterprising mentors across different industries as Lighthouse Mentors who will support the student journeys by engaging through different components of the program.
