Applied Materials looks to set up R&D center in Karnataka’s Bengaluru

American chip manufacturer, Applied Materials, is reportedly navigating through the process of setting up an R&D facility in Bengaluru, with discussions and approvals pending from the Karnataka government

The company, which has previously announced a $400 million investment plan for an engineering centre in the city, is in talks with the government to facilitate pre-construction approvals and to establish a Centre of Excellence for innovation and an R&D lab at Whitefield.

According to a PTI report, The discussions, led by M.B. Patil, Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development, also touched upon the importance of chemicals and gases for the semiconductor ecosystem and the ease of doing business in the region.

Visit to Maydan Technology Centre

A delegation led by M.B. Patil visited the Maydan Technology Centre, a facility dedicated to pioneering advancements in chip-making.

This visit underscores the government’s interest in and support for the establishment and growth of high-tech industries within the region, potentially paving the way for further investments and technological advancements in Karnataka.

Juniper Networks explores hardware manufacturing facility

Additionally, Juniper Networks Inc. is considering the establishment of a hardware manufacturing facility in Karnataka.

The company, which currently boasts the largest data centre in the state, employing 4000 individuals, engaged in discussions with the delegation about various aspects, including enhancing its R&D capabilities in the state, exploring hardware manufacturing, and understanding the supplier ecosystem, policies, and incentives in Karnataka.

Partnering on future technologies and CSR initiatives

Moreover, Juniper Networks and the delegation explored potential collaborations on renewable energy plans for business operations and government partnerships to establish a Centre of Excellence for design and wireless products by March 2024.

The discussions also ventured into corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, focusing on skill development in rural areas, and collaboration on training and skill enhancement in emerging technologies such as data science, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and cybersecurity.
