The Delhi government is now taking a step forward in digitizing the public transport system by introducing a WhatsApp-based ticketing service for bus commuters.

According to the reports, The initiative, which is inspired by the successful implementation of a similar system in the Delhi Metro, aims to digitize the entire travel experience for users of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses.

Additionally, it will simplify the ticketing process, reduce queues, and enhance the overall travel experience for bus commuters in Delhi.

The Inspiration behind the move

The decision to implement this system comes after the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) launched its WhatsApp-based ticketing service earlier this year. The service, which now covers all corridors, including the Gurugram Rapid Metro, has significantly eased the process of purchasing metro tickets.

How to book bus tickets via WhatsApp in Delhi?

To use this service, passengers will need to send a ‘Hi’ message to +91 9650855800 on WhatsApp. A chatbot will respond with details about bus routes, fares, and other relevant information.

Commuters can then select their desired bus and proceed with the payment, which supports UPI, credit/debit cards, and other methods. A QR code scan option will also be available for a seamless ticket purchase experience.

What are the limitations of booking Delhi bus tickets via WhatsApp?

While this system promises convenience, it does come with certain limitations. Ticket cancellations will not be allowed, and there will be a cap on the number of tickets a user can generate. A marginal convenience fee will be charged for transactions made via credit or debit card, but UPI-based transactions will incur no extra charges.

“We have been a pioneer in introducing technology in different sectors in transport. The WhatsApp-based ticketing system will encourage digital ticketing. Using technology makes the journey convenient as well as brings more transparency to a system. We have started working in this direction and soon this facility will be gifted to the people of Delhi,” Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said.
