“Covid opened our eyes to the huge gap in the sphere of public health education and research in India,” said Subroto Bagchi, who is also an author and public servant.

He added that the private, non-profit research university was approached on the basis of its vision, ability to foster and execute innovations, and holistic approach to education and research.

The investment will fuel the development of world-class physical, digital, and intellectual infrastructure and empower the Bagchi School to become a global leader in public health education and research, Ahmedabad University said in a statement.

It added that the School will break new ground by prioritising rigorous structured Master’s and PhD programmes in specific core public health disciplines.

“Their support will help build global leaders in public health out of India. As a University promoting interdisciplinary research and education, this is a unique setting for public health faculty, practitioners, and students to significantly define our nation’s health agenda,” said Pankaj Chandra, vice chancellor, Ahmedabad University. The School’s initial focus areas will include environmental health and analytical methods for health including biostatistics and data science, in order to address critical gaps in India’s public health education landscape, the university said.

While research focuses on discovery of sustainable solutions, clinical practice, the environment and so on, the School’s action arm would translate findings into evidence-based initiatives and policies, it said.

“The School will focus on delivering high-quality rigorous education programmes, while simultaneously identifying and promoting no-cost, low-cost, and cost-saving interventions to help improve health, especially for the underprivileged segments of society,” said Kaumudi Joshipura, Dean of the Bagchi School.

Susmita Bagchi said that with great leadership in place, they feel confident that the institution will create a legacy for at least the next 100 years, and that they want to up their engagement.
