Code on social security defines and supports gig workers: Government

Share via:

In response to a question in the Lok Sabha about food delivery startups that provide delivery in 10-20 minutes, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Rameswar Teli stated that, while India’s labour laws do not define gig workers, the Code on Social Security, 2020 does.

The Minister also stated that the Code on Social Security, 2020, includes social security schemes to assist these workers. On Monday, DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi asked the government if it was aware of food delivery startups bringing faster deliveries and their potential impact on gig workers. She also inquired whether the government would regulate these business models in the future and demanded basic compliance from food delivery startups regarding gig workers. It should be noted that faster delivery options have received significant criticism, particularly from politicians.
