Indian government has withdrawn the Personal Data Protection Bill

The Indian government withdrew the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2021 on Wednesday (August 3) after a joint parliamentary committee proposed 81 amendments (JPC). Following the withdrawal, the government intends to introduce a new Bill.

Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, moved a motion in the Lok Sabha to withdraw the Bill. In addition to the amendments, the parliamentary committee issued 12 recommendations for a “comprehensive legal framework.” “In light of the JPC’s report, a comprehensive legal framework is being developed.” As a result, given the circumstances, it is proposed to withdraw The Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019 and replace it with a new bill that conforms to the comprehensive legal framework,” Vaishnaw said.
