The Centre is considering legislation to regulate big tech companies’ data collection and data usage policies, according to the report.

As part of the process, the government has initiated an inter-ministerial dialogue to consult on the issue and plan the next steps. According to sources close to the situation, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and the Competition Commission of India all participated in the talks (CCI). Among the proposals discussed at the meeting was the creation of a new Digital Markets Act to govern business practises such as data collection and usage by technology behemoths. Aside from that, the panel proposed incorporating certain guidelines into the Competition Act itself to address concerns about new-age digital companies.
