The government has no plans to limit the sale of smartphones under INR 12,000 manufactured by Chinese companies, according to Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State (MoS) for Electronics and Information Technology (August 29).
“No such proposal exists in our ministry… There is a place for Indian brands… but not at the expense of foreign suppliers or foreign brands,” he was quoted as saying by Reuters. This comes less than a month after a Bloomberg report stated that the Indian government was looking to push Chinese smartphone giants out of the country’s market in order to revitalise the country’s ailing industry. According to the report, there is growing government concern about high-volume brands such as Realme and Transsion undercutting local manufacturers.
