The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is set to roll out its mobile phone caller identification system within the next three months.
The know your customer (KYC) information that customers provide to telecom companies when applying for a SIM card will be used to verify the system. The caller ID system is promoted as the Indian government’s competition to the Sweden-based Truecaller. As a result, TRAI caller ID will use largely accurate data used by telcos to issue SIM cards. TRAI Chairman PD Vaghela was quoted in an HT report as saying that the telecom watchdog has held numerous stakeholder consultations to resolve the issues. In the following two to three weeks, the new feature should go live, according to Vaghela.
