OpenAI has made developer APIs for its popular ChatGPT and Whisper AI models available, allowing developers to integrate them into their apps. An API (application programming interface) is a set of protocols that enable various computer programmes to communicate with one another. In this case, app developers can use OpenAI technology to enhance their apps’ capabilities for a monthly fee based on usage.
ChatGPT, which was released in late November, generates coherent text in a variety of styles. Whisper, a speech-to-text model released in September, can convert spoken audio to text. Demand for a ChatGPT API in particular has been extremely high, leading to the creation of an unauthorised API late last year that violated OpenAI’s terms of service. To meet the demand, OpenAI has launched its own API offering. The APIs will be computed off-device and in the cloud.
