Mojang, the developer behind Minecraft, has announced that it will no longer utilize Reddit as a forum for gathering feedback and engaging with the community. The decision comes in response to significant rule and moderation changes being implemented by Reddit leadership at the end of the month.
As a result, the Minecraft subreddit will no longer serve as a primary destination for accessing changelogs, FAQs, and other official content. Instead, Mojang is directing users to visit their official feedback website, feedback.minecraft.net, or engage with them through alternative social media channels.
In an explanation provided by the Minecraft Java Tech Lead, known online as ‘slicedlime,’ it was stated that the recent changes introduced by Reddit management have made it unsuitable for posting official content or guiding players. The team expressed gratitude for the feedback and discussions that took place in previous changelog threads, but emphasized the need to shift communication to other platforms.
The changes mentioned refer to Reddit’s new fees for API usage by third-party applications. The implementation of these fees has led to the closure of popular third-party smartphone Reddit apps, such as Apollo and Reddit is Fun, due to the exorbitant costs associated with Reddit’s API access. This has sparked protests within the Reddit community, as these third-party apps provided enhanced moderator tools and accessibility options that the official Reddit app lacks.
While the impact of these changes may not be significant for most game companies, it holds greater importance for a family-friendly game like Minecraft, where creating safe spaces for children to explore is a priority. This move by Mojang indicates that companies may no longer view Reddit as a reliable platform for maintaining such spaces and engaging with their communities effectively.
