India is set to launch an artificial intelligence (AI) mission to enhance its computing power capacity, with a focus on supporting small companies and startups, announced Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking at the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit 2023, Modi outlined the mission’s goal of establishing ample AI compute power within the country to provide better facilities for innovators and startups. The mission will prioritize promoting AI applications in agriculture, healthcare, and education-related sectors.
Modi stressed the importance of inclusive AI development, emphasizing that the benefits should be accessible to all users. He highlighted the need for AI development to align with human and democratic values, incorporating emotions, ethics, and effectiveness into the technology’s journey.
Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, emphasized India’s commitment to leveraging AI for inclusive growth. The vision involves utilizing AI in sectors such as native language services for citizens, enhancing healthcare accessibility, and improving agricultural yields through precision techniques.
Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, noted the significant advancements in AI over the past 18 months. Modi underscored the importance of transparent and unbiased algorithms in training AI models, emphasizing the need for upskilling and reskilling to enhance public trust in the technology.
While recognizing AI’s potential for development, Modi also cautioned against its misuse, highlighting challenges such as deep fakes, cybersecurity threats, data theft, and the potential for terrorists to exploit AI tools. He emphasized the need for a plan to prevent the negative impact of AI, acknowledging its dual role as a tool for development and a potential threat.
The GPAI, a global alliance comprising 29 countries, including the US, the UK, the EU, Germany, Israel, Singapore, Australia, Belgium, and France, aims to guide the responsible development and use of AI based on principles of human rights, inclusion, diversity, innovation, and economic growth. The summit marks the fourth gathering of GPAI, following events in Montreal, Paris, and Tokyo.
