If you had a Cash App account between August 2018 and August 2024, you could be eligible to claim up to $2,575 in compensation for a data breach – but only if you submit your claim quickly …

Cash App data breach

The Cash App is owned by Block, formerly known as Square. Back in 2022, the company disclosed a data breach affecting 8.2M users.

The company revealed that a former employee retained access to US customer information despite departing the company months earlier. Cash App is one of the most popular apps for iOS and a competitor to Apple’s own Apple cash service.

As reported by TechCrunch, Cash App is notifying around 8.2 million of its users about this breach. Information potentially accessed by the former employee includes full names and brokerage account numbers. In some instances, the employee also accessed “brokerage portfolio value, brokerage portfolio holdings, and stock trading activity for one trading day.”

Company agrees to offer compensation

In response to a class action lawsuit brought against the company, Block didn’t admit liability but agreed to compensate victims for costs and time spent dealing with the matter.

Engadget reports that the deadline for filing your claim is rapidly approaching.

You may be eligible to make a claim if you had a Cash App account between August 23, 2018 and August 20 of this year. The settlement will cover up to $2,500 of out-of-pocket costs stemming from the breaches, as well as up to three hours worth of lost time at $25 per hour. Those who have sustained a monetary loss and haven’t yet been reimbursed can file a claim for that too.

If you plan to file a claim through the , you’ll need to do so by 2AM ET on November 19.

Once your claim is filed, you’ll need to wait until December 19 to hear whether or not a judge accepts the settlement arrangement. If not, that could be mixed news: you’ll have to wait longer to receive your payment, but it may be for a larger sum.
