Things are getting pretty confusing with respect to the BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) board’s decision to go for a VRS (voluntary retirement scheme). Firstly, the BSNL employee union opposed this move, citing several reasons which you can read by referring to the link below. Now, the Bharat Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) has also opposed the same and said that instead of a VRS, the employees should get promotions.

In a letter to the telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, Ravindra Himte, General Secretary of BMS said that BSNL needs to fix human resources (HR) related issues which include things like pay, pension, and promotion. The decision of a second VRS has surprised BMS.

According to an ET Telecom report, Bhimte mentioned in the letter that the long-pending HR issues of pay, promotion and pension needs to be resolved and 3rd PRC (pay revision committee recommendations) as a reward should be given to the employees for the sincere approach in carrying forward the organisation from a state or peril to a state of growth and development.

Why Govt Might Want a VRS for BSNL?

BSNL’s board has approved the VRS 2.0, but the final call will be taken by the government. The government likely wants the VRS to take place because it would lower the employee costs for BSNL in the short-term. The telco is already struggling to make profits, and its revenues aren’t much compared to the private telcos.

At such a time, if efficiency could be brought into the management by implementing VRS 2.0, that may create the best future for the telco. BSNL board is giving employees VRS because it feels there is a need to lower the employee costs. But the employees have a different outlook to this.
