Zomato CEO says he has received over 10,000 applications for Chief of Staff role

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal, who faced criticism after announcing a Chief of Staff job opening on November 20, said that he had received over 10,000 applications for the role.

The position, based at Zomato’s Gurugram headquarters, sparked backlash on social media due to its unusual terms—no salary for the first year and a hefty Rs 20 lakh fee required from candidates.

In his latest update, Goyal shared insights about the applicants and announced that the application process would close at 6 PM today.

Goyal, in his post on X on Wednesday, shared graphics describing the role and mentioned the eligibility criteria and responsibilities of the selected candidate.

The post described the role as ideal for someone with “hunger,” “empathy,” and “common sense,” but with no substantial prior experience or sense of entitlement.

While the first year offered no salary, Zomato promised to donate Rs 50 lakh to a charity of the candidate’s choice, an amount equivalent to the usual salary for such a position.

Starting from the second year, the selected candidate would receive a competitive salary exceeding Rs 50 lakh annually.

As Goyal’s post went viral, social media users slammed the job offer as “exploitative” and remarked that it was nothing but a “bad idea”.
