Instagram is testing features copied from rival photo sharing app BeReal

Since Instagram shifted its emphasis to video content and its new algorithm around sponsored or suggested content, there has been a void for an app that does what Instagram used to do. Several apps naturally arose to fill the void. One such app was the BeReal App.

In recent years, the BeReal App has reached a whole new level of popularity. Several former Instagram users have switched to the new app. As a result of this, Instagram appears to be working on replicating some of BeReal’s features. One of BeaReal’s distinguishing features is that the photo-sharing app prompts users to take and post an image once a day at the same time as all of their friends. According to a screenshot posted on Twitter by developer Alessandro Paluzzi, Instagram is testing a feature that looks almost identical to BeReal. Instagram users are asked to ‘Join IG Candid Challenges’ and take photos and post something every day at a different time, according to the image. Users will receive a notification in 2 minutes to capture and share a photo. That is the fundamental premise of BeReal. According to an Instagram spokesperson, the tool is a “internal prototype” that is “not being tested externally.”
