Jack Dorsey: “My biggest regret is that Twitter was a company at all”

Share via:

Although Jack Dorsey is no longer at Twitter, he is still waxing philosophical about the company. In response to a tweet in which he was asked about his biggest regrets (along with, sigh, anecdotal claims about political bias on the platform), the company’s co-founder and former CEO made the grand observation that he wishes the company had never existed at all.

“The biggest issue, and my biggest regret,” Dorsey tweeted. If you haven’t heard Dorsey on one before, the notion that Twitter should never have been a corporation may seem strange. But he doesn’t mean that the project should never have existed; rather, if he could rewrite history, he would have (allegedly) steered Twitter toward being a protocol rather than a company. “I don’t believe any individual or institution should own social media, or media companies in general,” Dorsey tweeted in April. “It must be a transparent and verifiable protocol.” Everything is a step in that direction.”
