Controversy surrounds tweet claiming 1.1 billion views, raising questions about Twitter metrics

Share via:

A tweet sent out by Twitter user @tamsully12 has allegedly garnered a staggering 1.1 billion views, according to Twitter metrics. The tweet, posted on May 24, asked users to name a famous historic battle “WITHOUT GOOGLING.” Despite having fewer than 11,000 followers, the tweet achieved this milestone in less than a month.

However, some users are questioning the accuracy of the metric. With only around 20,000 likes, many find it hard to believe that a tweet with one billion views could have received relatively low engagement. Notably, reality star Kim Kardashian tweeted on the same day to her nearly 75 million followers, which received significantly fewer views and engagement compared to @tamsully12’s tweet.

A note was later added to clarify that tweet views are not unique, meaning that one user can contribute multiple views if they scroll and view the tweet multiple times. Despite attempts to contact @tamsully12, the user had their direct messages turned off and did not respond to a request for comment.

The tweet in question has garnered over 86,000 quote tweets, with many users taking the opportunity to crack jokes rather than name actual historic battles. Twitter introduced the views count feature in December, and it counts any user who is logged into Twitter and views a tweet, regardless of whether they follow the author.

It remains unclear if this tweet is the first to reach one billion views on Twitter. Previously, Twitter reported 238 million monetizable daily active users in the second quarter of 2022. The feature has received criticism from users who find the view count unreliable or inflated.

While the tweet’s achievement may be a topic of debate, it has undoubtedly sparked numerous conversations and jokes on the platform, capturing the attention of millions of users worldwide.
