The Supreme Court issued a notice on Friday (September 9) on a petition filed by the Tamil Nadu government challenging the Madras High Court’s order overturning the state’s ban on online games such as rummy and poker.

A Supreme Court bench comprised of Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice Vikram Nath issued the notice and asked respondents, which included gaming companies such as Junglee Games, Play Games 24-7, Gemeskraft Technologies, as well as the All India Gaming Federation and others, to file their responses within four weeks. The case has been scheduled for hearing in eight weeks, according to the bench. In December of last year, the Tamil Nadu government filed an appeal with the Supreme Court against the Madras High Court’s August 3 decision. A High Court bench led by Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy ruled that the government’s law prohibiting online betting games was unconstitutional.
