While brands like Apple and Huawei have dabbled in smartphone technology with built-in satellite connectivity, the field remains limited. Motorola, however, is taking a different path by unveiling a satellite hotspot communicator that can be paired with any smartphone. Moreover, the company has bigger plans to expand this satellite capability to more of its devices.
Motorola Teasing a New Modular Accessory
Following the successful launch of the Motorola Defy Satellite Link hotspot, a collaboration with Bullitt, Motorola is now hinting at yet another innovative accessory. This new offering, named the Tiantong satellite phone module, is designed to be a snap-on case for modular smartphones. The imminent announcement of this device is expected to take place in China.
A Glimpse into Tiantong’s Capabilities
The name of the accessory, the Tiantong satellite phone module, alludes to its coverage source—the Tiantong-1 geostationary satellite network, which serves China. Once connected to a compatible smartphone, the module promises to enable two-way satellite calls and messaging. A dedicated switch on the case makes initiating satellite calls straightforward and intuitive.
Details Awaited
As anticipation builds, questions about the module’s pricing, compatibility with Motorola phones, and bundled services remain unanswered. The unveiling event may provide clarity on these aspects. Additionally, it’s uncertain whether Motorola will extend the case’s support to regions beyond China, thus enhancing its global appeal.
Motorola Current and Future Satellite Solutions
For individuals seeking satellite connectivity on their phones while venturing into remote locations, the Defy Satellite Link is currently a viable choice. Priced at $149, it offers a one-year basic subscription plan and 30 SMS per month. This device covers usage in the USA and various parts of Europe.
Regarding other smartphones with satellite capabilities, the upcoming Apple iPhone 15 will continue the legacy of its predecessor by incorporating emergency SOS functionality via satellite. On the horizon, Samsung’s Galaxy S24 is set to join the ranks next year, with a feature that connects through 5G non-terrestrial networks for enhanced connectivity.
