VideoLAN sent a legal notice to Indian ministries regarding the ban

Open source media player platform VideoLAN, has sent a legal notice to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) regarding a ban imposed on it in August of this year.

VideoLAN claims in the legal notice that its website was blocked in the country without prior notice or an opportunity to present its case to the relevant authority. The Department of Transportation (DoT) blocked VideoLAN’s uniform resource locator (URL) in the country in March 2022. Following that, VideoLAN approached MeitY and asked it to share the reason for the ban. However, the company claims that no response was received from MeitY at the time. According to VideoLAN, authorities are required by law to issue a notice to the entity whose content or website is being banned, citing Rule 8 of the IT Rules, 2009 and the Supreme Court (SC) decision in the Shreya Singhal case.
