Apple’s long-rumored plans to use its own wireless chipsets in iPhones appear to be coming to fruition. According to Bloomberg, Apple is not only working on its first cellular modem (now slated for late 2024 or early 2025), but also on a Bluetooth and WiFi chip to replace the Broadcom chip that handles those functions. According to the rumours, that part will arrive in 2025.
The company is also said to be working on a sequel that will combine Bluetooth, cellular, and WiFi functionality into a single design. A move like this could simplify production while also saving space in the iPhone’s cramped chassis. Both Apple and Qualcomm have declined to comment. Broadcom has been contacted for comment. Qualcomm stated in November that it would supply the vast majority of iPhone cellular modems for 2023 models, but that Apple hardware would make a “minimal contribution” in fiscal 2025. Meanwhile, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan stated in December that he believed Apple would continue to use his company’s components.
