In a major breakthrough for India’s deep-tech sector and the global Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) market, Hyderabad-based aerospace pioneer BluJ Aerospace has officially unveiled its Gen #2 prototype. This commercial-grade aircraft is the first built on VANTIS, the company’s proprietary, platform-based architecture developed after four years of intensive, in-house research and development.
The introduction of Gen #2 follows the successful deployment of Gen #1—BluJ’s initial technology demonstrator, which marked India’s first public flight demonstration of a 500 kg class electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The Gen #2 aircraft has successfully transitioned into active flight testing, positioning BluJ Aerospace as the closest-to-commercialization heavy-payload aerial logistics provider in the country.
Shifting Aviation Paradigms: The VANTIS Platform Approach
The core competitive advantage of BluJ Aerospace lies within VANTIS, its shared technology foundation that governs the airframe, propulsion, flight controls, and onboard autonomy systems across every aircraft the company constructs. Rather than managing isolated, single-product development pipelines, BluJ employs a scalable platform architecture akin to modern automotive production.
By utilizing this architecture, each successive aircraft variant automatically inherits subsystems already flight-proven on the VANTIS platform. This design methodology radically compresses go-to-market timelines, lowers engineering and development costs, and ensures that the entire family of aircraft grows safer and more reliable with every cumulative flight hour achieved.
Gen #2 Technical Specifications and Commercial Targeting
Purpose-built to tackle the heavy-payload logistics challenges across regional transport networks, Gen #2 shifts the VANTIS platform from a foundational technology demonstrator to a fully operational, commercial-grade aircraft.
Key design and operational specifications of the Gen #2 aircraft include:
Heavy-Payload Logistics Capability: Engineered to sustain an active commercial payload target of above 200 kg.
Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW): Operates securely under a 500 kg maximum weight threshold.
Aero-Structural Configuration: Utilizes an efficient lift plus cruise configuration designed to optimize vertical ascension and forward aerodynamic flight.
Eco-Friendly Powertrain: Functions as a fully battery-powered aircraft, built to the strict certification standards required for the upcoming commercial iteration, known as REACH.
Real-World Operational Pilots: Currently deployed in early customer test pilots, cargo load evaluations, and real-world logistics mission simulations.
Executive Vision: Developing What Comes After the Runway
The strategic importance of localized, platform-driven aerospace engineering is vital for high-growth economies like India, which depend heavily on efficient freight movement.
“The next major shift in aviation is the move from single product programs to platform based architectures," stated Amar Sri Vatsavaya, Founder and CEO of BluJ Aerospace. "Just as the automotive industry builds multiple vehicles on a common platform, Advanced Air Mobility will need adaptable architectures that scale across missions, payloads, and customer use cases. That is the advantage VANTIS gives BluJ. Our platform based approach lets us develop multiple AAM product classes efficiently and at scale.”
Highlighting the compounding nature of the technology, Naganand Doraswamy, Managing Partner of Ideaspring Capital, added:
"Deep-tech categories that compound, from semiconductors to robotics and now aerospace, are won by teams that build platforms, not single products. India has had the engineering talent for decades, but very few teams have applied that platform discipline to aircraft. That is what BluJ has done with VANTIS, and Gen #2 is the first commercial output of an architecture we expect will shape how India shows up in global aerospace over the next decade.”
Expanding Into Defense, Power, and Hydrogen Ecosystems
BluJ Aerospace’s pipeline spans critical industrial sectors, including infrastructure logistics, express cargo, energy, airport transfers, and national defense. The firm has already completed a successful pilot deployment with a leading Power sector Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) for heavy infrastructure logistics. Additionally, BluJ has secured active defense partnerships with a major Defense PSU alongside premium Indian defense primes.
Looking beyond battery power, the VANTIS architecture is designed to scale seamlessly up to a one-ton payload class for heavy logistics, as well as hydrogen-electric long-range passenger variants targeted for 2027 to 2028. BluJ has already successfully developed a functional ground-based version of this hydrogen propulsion system, featuring an in-house developed Type IV composite hydrogen tank, and is steadily progressing toward its flight-certified iteration.
To support the infrastructure required for clean energy aviation, BluJ is actively collaborating with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) on hydrogen ecosystem development.
