The Tamil Nadu cabinet has approved an ordinance prohibiting online gaming with stakes in the state, which is a major setback for the Indian online gaming industry.
The ordinance has been submitted for approval to the Governor of Tamil Nadu. The news comes just days after the Supreme Court issued a notice on a petition filed by the Tamil Nadu government challenging the Madras High Court’s decision to overturn the state’s ban on online games like rummy and poker. A government committee has recommended the establishment of a regulatory body to classify online games as skill or chance.
