UAE reveals major change to work permits

Share via:

The UAE has made significant changes to the length of work licences in the nation. The active period of work permits in the country will be increased to three years, based on proposals by a Federal National Council committee. Working in the UAE without a valid work permit is unlawful.

Prior to FNC approval, UAE work licences were provided for a period of two years. The FNC authorised the extension due to the costs associated with applying for and receiving work permits. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) provides the necessary documents for workers in the country.

The FNC Committee on Financial, Economic, and Industrial Affairs recommended that UAE work permits be extended from two to three years. Furthermore, the committee has proposed waiving work permit expenses in the event of an employee changing jobs.

Another notable shift for workers in the UAE was the FNC-approved suggestion that an employee must stay with an employer for a minimum of 12 months after successfully completing a probation term. According to media reports, this provision may be waived if both the employee and the company agree.
