Indian automotive giant Maruti Suzuki recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department with the aim to automate driving license test tracks in Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Mathura, Prayagraj, and Varanasi.

According to the company, the partnership will revolutionize the driving testing process, making it more comprehensive, efficient, and transparent.

Implementation of technology in testing

The Driver Training and Testing Institutes (DTTIs) will be upgraded with scientifically designed test tracks, high-definition cameras, and an integrated IT system. The company said the setup will enable accurate assessment of driving skills. The use of video analytics technology and RFID tags will automate the testing process, ensuring it is fool-proof and devoid of human discretion, it said.

Chandra Bhushan Singh (IAS), Transport Commissioner, Government of Uttar Pradesh said, “We are extremely delighted to partner with Maruti Suzuki in making the issuance of driving license more scientific and transparent. Under the MoA, test tracks at Driver Training and Testing Institutes (DTTIs) at Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Mathura, Prayagraj and Varanasi will be automated. This will make our roads safer, help bring down road accidents and save lives.”

The scope of the project

Maruti Suzuki will automate the driving license test tracks for Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMV), Light Motor Vehicles (LMV), and two-wheelers. The Government of Uttar Pradesh will oversee the civil work and operation of the centers. This project aligns with the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) to evaluate driving skills accurately.

Maruti Suzuki’s efforts towards road safety

Maruti Suzuki has identified road safety as a crucial area for its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts. The company has established Automated Driving Test Tracks (ADTTs) and Institutes of Driving & Traffic Research (IDTRs) in various states, training over 44 lakh drivers.

Additionally, It has collaborated with the Delhi Government on the Traffic Safety Management System (TSMS), issuing over 33 lakh challans for traffic violations through advanced camera and radar systems.
