Apple to start paying compensation to some iPhone users for slowing down their phones

Apple has agreed to settle a lawsuit in Canada regarding how some of its older iPhones worked. There were claims that these iPhones were intentionally slowed down by Apple without users knowing about it. The company has denied doing anything wrong, but they have agreed to settle the case by paying up to $14.4 million Canadian dollars.

If this settlement is approved by the court, people who had certain iPhone models might be able to get some money as compensation from Apple. Those eligible could receive up to $150 Canadian dollars, which is equivalent to Rs 9320 in Indian rupees, for each affected iPhone they owned. However, the exact amount someone might get depends on how many people ask for money.

The group of people included in this lawsuit consists of those who lived in Canada (except Quebec) and had specific iPhone models—like the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, SE, 7, or 7 Plus—before December 21, 2017.

People who might qualify for this compensation don’t need to do anything right away. More information about how to claim money will be available on a special website if the settlement gets the court’s approval. But if someone doesn’t want to be part of this group suing Apple and wants to keep the option to sue Apple by themselves, they need to let the court know by January 10.

This lawsuit started after Apple admitted that they were slowing down some older iPhones with older batteries. They did this to stop the phones from unexpectedly shutting down. Apple didn’t initially tell people about this change when they updated the iPhone software, which made a lot of iPhone users upset. Later on, Apple said sorry for not being clear and reduced the cost of changing iPhone batteries to $29 for some time.

This isn’t the only lawsuit Apple faced over this issue. In the United States, they settled a similar lawsuit for $500 million. People who were part of that case are starting to receive about $92 each this week.
