The UAE’s Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) has entered into two agreements with Google to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) in the management of traffic and control of traffic lights. These partnerships reflect the UAE’s commitment to advancing its key AI priorities in research and sustainability.
During an event at the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), the ITC unveiled two initiatives, one of which is called Project Green Light. This initiative utilizes AI techniques to collect and analyze traffic data at intersections, providing recommendations to optimize the efficiency of traffic lights in order to reduce traffic congestion and CO2 emissions.
Google’s AI Platform will be utilized to analyze big data generated from Google Maps, enabling the forecasting of traffic patterns, prediction of congestion areas, and proactive planning to minimize traffic issues. Additionally, real-time data on accidents and traffic congestion will be sourced from Google Maps, providing accurate and up-to-date information to the ITC.
The agreements highlight the collaboration between the parties in utilizing AI to improve the quality of life in Abu Dhabi. The focus is on reducing pollution, enhancing well-being, and developing innovative transportation and mobility solutions that cater to the present and future needs of society.
By implementing Project Green Light, the UAE aims to harvest critical data on traffic conditions at intersections, automating the optimization of traffic light functions. This initiative is expected to alleviate vehicle congestion hotspots and contribute to improved air quality by reducing carbon emissions across the emirate.
Mohamed Hussain Karmastaji, Executive Director of the ITC’s ITS Sector, expressed optimism that the collaboration with Google will yield real-time benefits for road users. The integration of AI technology is expected to enhance traffic management, minimize congestion, and create a more sustainable and efficient transportation system.
